Three Piece Meal
Ceramic, metal, found wood

Strange Poultry is a series of sculptures created throughout the spring and summer of 2008. "Three Piece Meal," shown to the left, was my initial exploration into the "sci-fi" side of poultry farming - hormone science, mutations and genetic engineering. I am fascinated by the industrial food chain, the loss of the family farm, and the creation of the "nugget." Advancements in farm science have allowed greater food yields, at the loss of connection to what we eat. Homogenization and mass production have allowed for everything to "taste like chicken." "Strange Poultry" aims to reveal and discuss my interest in the "ideal" animal product. The chickens evoke thoughts of how removed humans have become from what they put into their bodies as well as the thought and effort that goes into artificial production of the natural.

Strange Poultry evolved in part thanks to Kari Marboe and Adam Green, directors of mg gallery, a new storefront gallery in the Temescal district of Oakland. mg became my "hen house" - check mg's flickr gallery for more show photos!
